Maki Residence

For about 60 years, the Maki family were craftsmen in the art of hyouguya. A hyouguya craftsman binds cloth or paper beautifully onto folding screens, sliding doors or scrolls for decoration. This noren has an image of a hanging scroll on it. As the noren waves in the breeze, the noren and scroll will softly move together. The family has four noren, each featuring a hanging scroll of a different color. These days, hanging scrolls and folding screens are becoming less common. These items are treasured parts of Japan's rich heritage and culture.
